Anthropomorphism for the most part, but that first one is dead on.

We’ll post links to sites that have Wednesday (plus or minus a few days) submissions of their chosen animal artwork. “Art is not a mirror held up to reality, but a hammer with which to shape it.”—Bertolt Brecht

Give me a break. These pictures show nothing of sad animals. Try googling anthropomorphism.

You are a fish, not an animal.

i think most of these are just perspective, but i do think animals can be sad, i know hippo’s guard the karkasses of their relatives…

That said the photos are nice, I especially like the elphant

  • i said:

i don’t think anyone has ever said “animals can’t be sad”

  • Hmm, well, how do we know the bird is sad? Elephants tend to always look like that. The dog and seal do not look sad…..

That being said, of course animals can be sad.

  • Vitor said:

I know people that are animals and they are always sad.

  • Nothing’s wrong, they’re just thinking.

  • Charles said:

While in some of these pictures, the situation the animal is in would imply sadness. However most of them are completely devoid of context, relying on the title of this article to instill emotional response. We have no reason to believe these animals are sad, happy, or indifferent, because there’s no context. As a species designed to recognize emotion on primates, we can often grossly misinterpret the facial expressions of other species by trying to give primate qualities to a creature that is not a primate.

  • Bee said:

just because someone looks sad, doesn’t necessarily mean they are sad.

  • LA COMIDA said:

Nobody ever said animals cant feel sad. What people do say on the other hand is that animals cant cry. They don’t have tear ducts.

  • Nick said:

If anything, this is insulting to animals. It’s denigrating.

This post represents a lot of what I hate about humanity. We have no feelings for animals that truly suffer. But if they’re cute, or they look sad, then we’re immediately all over them. We plaster our emotions onto them, and ignore their true needs. If we see a dog with a broken leg, we’re infinitly sympathetic. But if they need to tear down a forest and kill an entire species of, say, bats? we don’t give a *. We’d rather have the minimall.

Essentially, Charles is dead on regarding how our wetware looks for faces and feelings in everything from clouds to grilled cheese. Don’t let it fool you.

    Also, as for the comment:

“If we counted those casualties we would have no choice but put the human race to death for its crimes againsty other members of the planets society.”

I’m sorry, but that’s utter bullshit. Malaria has killed about a million people per year for the past fifty thousand years. A blue whale will eat 8,000 pounds of krill daily for nearly all of it’s 140 year life. That’s a hundred billion billion billion krill in its whole life. Why don’t we put malaria and blue whales on trial? it makes about as much sense.

  • paresh said:

i agree that animals have also emotions.

made by Nick is one of the stupidest things I have read in a long time. The blue whale, as well as the Malaria virus, are only doing what is necessary for their survival, while humans decimate entire species by destroying their habitats for lumber or to clear areas to strip mine, or to build more of our useless cities and highways.

Well, the first photo is of swallows that are very well known for breeding for life like many birds (monogamous). And thus are very disturbed from the death of a life partner, so very likely the swallow is sad or confused. The rest of the photo’s are just our interpretation of a photo after someone told us they were sad. I’ll say they are actually all sleepy, now look at them again.
Emotions are not only found in Humans obviously, you can argue being aware of our emotions is something only humans share, but theoretically anything can have/ show emotion

Animals don’t have feelings, we project our own feelings on them. They cannot reason, and they aren’t aware of their ultimate demise. We are aware of all of these things though, we live is a state of super Conscience.

  • Animalia said:

Funny how those that shout “anthropomorphism” are often the same people that contribute to the domestication of wild animals, attend circuses where giant elephants wear people clothes, and so forth…

I find that those that are quick to use the word are those that are unable to admit that we as humans are animals. One would have to deny all sciences to assume that we are so different from them ;-)

  • Etna said:

Animals don’t have feelings? And I suppose you think they can’t suffer from things like loneliness, depression, anxiety, or boredom too?

You’re an idiot to ignore the scientific evidence that proves otherwise.

That cow tied up with nylon ropes looks pretty uncomfortable! Other that than that, I’m not so sure how to read the facial expressions of all the animals above, even though I regularly deal with dogs, horses, goats and cats, and think I can read them pretty well in real life.

none of these animals look sad, maybe the second dog…they just ARE, you cant determine emotion solely through body language. What if that first dog laying, is relaxing cause he just had sex or something, and he looks complacent to me

Elephants and Beavers kill tons of other animals because of how they destroy their environment (as do other animals). Elephants don’t need to pull down trees, and beavers don’t need to block rivers to survive. All animals are destructive to some point, some of us more then others. Beavers should definitley be put on trial.

    photoshopped.

  • cello said:

Animalia, you are an idiot. Let me tell you the three reasons why you’re an idiot.

    1) Most, if not all, of the people who said this is Anthropomorphism never said that animals cannot in fact be sad. It’s just that these animals are very obviously anatomically different than homosapians and just because a human frowns in such a way as the dogs in these pictures do, doesn’t mean that these dogs aren’t just chillin’.

    2) Where the hell did that comment about “those that shout “anthropomorphism” are often the same people that contribute to the domestication of wild animals, etc, etc” come from? Unbiased fact? Pffft. Go assume things elsewhere. I’ve been a strict vegan for 10 years and built my own house out of sustainable materials and live mostly off of local produce and my own garden outback. I’ve taken in two stray cats who would have more than likely otherwise died, and I treat them with utmost respect. However, I am shouting anthropomorphism at most of these pictures.

    3) You used a winky emoticon. Anyone who uses emoticons is automatically an idiot.

    Thank you for your time.

Elephants actually do show emotions. They have very strong memories and remember things from their childhood such as being captured or watching a member of their herd die. They can also sufffer from PTSD from this and will attack anything in their path. One elephant in a reservation in Tennesee had a flashback of something and accidentally killed a caretaker in its breakdown. The elephant showed signs of remorse and sadness from its actions. They also can recognize other elephants from the past, so to speak. One elephant was reunited with its mother and stayed with her until she died.

  • Amy said:

But, yeah. You can’t judge emotions based on a look.
They’re wild animals and don’t think like humans. Wild animals react based on their instincts. A lion will attack and kill a wounded gazelle to eat and live. It doesn’t care about how the gazelle feels.

i agree, we are animals too. we can be sad.

well, it really depends on how you see such photographs.

for the first photo, the bird might be shouting:

    “FOOD! COME AND EAT IT!”

    or

    “VICTORY IS MINE!”

    or

    “ENEMY’S DOWN!”

    hahaha

anyway. most of us will view it as
“HOW CAN YOU LEAVE ME !”

i feel out of all animals.
the most evil ones will be human =)
they have something most animals never had.
    cunningness.
humans are just born, taught and matured to be more cunning.

therefore i rather love animals more,
    and i love these photographs.
i have 5 cats and i always wonder what are they thinking.

    animal lover for life ;)
